Letter from Chair

Dear Community Members,

As we move towards realizing the vision of full-service community schools throughout Oakland, we’d like to enlist your support in one of our most critical endeavors: the defining of effective principals and leadership for full-service community schools.

This year, the Oakland Unified School District will leverage community task forces to begin refining and implementing the core components of our new strategic direction to create a full-service community district.  The Effective Principal and Leadership Task Force is charged to engage the community to define high-quality, effective leadership for Oakland schools.  Our vision for meaningful engagement is an ambitious one.

The anticipated deliverables of this task force include a definition of effective principals and leadership for Oakland schools, as well as recommendations to the Board for how best to align our recruitment, professional development, evaluation, and retention strategies to ensure that there is a high quality effective principal at every school, every day, so that our children are academically and socially successful.

The Effective Principal and Leadership Task Force is made up of two groups:

•    core members who will review the latest research on effective leadership, conduct fieldwork or school visits, and come up with a recommendation of the definition of effective principal leadership

•    advisory members who will give input and feedback to the Core Task Force

We are asking Advisory members to commit to meeting every last Tuesday of the month, beginning Sept. 28, 2010, from 4:00-6:00pm, to give input, review the latest research on effective leadership, and give feedback to the Core Task Force. Core members will meet three times a month: the first, third, and last Tuesday of the month, starting October 5, 2010 from 4:00-6:00pm.

After the Task Force has finalized a recommendation, they will engage the community for their input, and then ultimately provide a final report to the Board of Education that includes the final definition, as well as recommendations for the necessary supports and conditions to realize high quality effective leadership in every school, every day.

All of Oakland’s children deserve an outstanding education. Each child has a right to an excellent educational experience in a school led by a high quality effective leader. Please join us in this process to ensure we build an Oakland Unified where every student is safe, healthy, and academically successful.
